About Lawrence
Hello, I’m Lawrence Denton, candidate for Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk. I am a proud Memphian, born and raised in Whitehaven, and a 1992 graduate of Fairley High School. In 1998, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee at Martin. For more than 25 years, I have dedicated my career to serving the citizens of Shelby County with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to improving our justice system.
I am blessed to share my life with my wife, Tori (McKinney) Denton, and we are the proud parents of our two children, Lawrence III and Lauryn. My family is my foundation and the driving force behind my commitment to public service.
Professional Experience
Over the course of my career, I have gained extensive hands‑on experience within the Shelby County justice system. I began my service as an entry‑level Counselor B with Pretrial Services, where I worked directly with individuals navigating the court process. Through hard work, leadership, and a dedication to fairness, I was promoted to Supervisor, overseeing staff and daily operations.
In 2018, I was appointed Director of Operations under Criminal Court Clerk Heidi Kuhn. In this role, I helped guide major improvements in workflow, technology, and customer service. I currently serve as Administrator of Operations, where I continue to focus on efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that the Clerk’s Office meets the needs of citizens, attorneys, and justice partners.
My decades of experience inside the Criminal Justice Center have prepared me to lead the Clerk’s Office with the professionalism and operational knowledge this position demands.
